Personal & Academic Support
In Byron College, helping each student to develop to their full potential as an individual is extremely important to us. Providing high quality courses that students are able to be successful in is a key part of what we do – but there is much more to it than that.
Each student is assigned a personal tutor who is available for support and guidance. Tutor groups are small so tutors can get to know each student and their individual needs. Students meet with their tutor each morning and are able to seek his/her advice before, during or after the college day. Students receive at least one scheduled individual interview with their tutors each half-term, where advice, support and encouragement are given. During these sessions, tutors will help their tutees to assess their own strengths and weaknesses and support them as they set individual targets for improvement.
Further support and help are provided by our new Head of Yr12 Mr Martin and Head of Yr13 Mrs Oxberry, along with Mrs Jenkin who is responsible for the Key Stage 5 Teaching, Learning and Progress. Further help and support can be gained from careers’ specialists to give support for progressing into Further Education and future employment. Of course, not forgetting, the subject teachers themselves. A counsellor is available to help students through any difficult times; this can be requested by the Head of Year.
UCAS applications – support is given to students via packages such as SACU and ULAS which our staff and students are trained to use. University visits and talks also support this vital time not forgetting the tutor and HOY who support the proof reading of students personal statements and write their academic references. Other agencies such as DWP support students in the development of effective CV’s and give advice and guidance on ‘interview techniques’
For some students ‘Teach First’ also provide support in the UCAS application via the ‘Futures Programme’ and the Social Mobility Foundation programme offer a 5 year support to eligible students.
Mentoring/Academic Support
As well as your personal tutor, the college have implemented a new weekly monitoring system with subjects, where the 6th form team monitor the progress of students and implement supportive measures where needed. Every 6th form student will also receive an academic diary to help them in their day to day activities
Opportunities
There are lots of opportunities for students at Byron 6th form College to enable them to ‘grow and flourish’; great things to put onto a UCAS Personal Statement or CV for the future. Here at Byron 6th Form students can;
- Apply to become Head Boy / Girl
- Become an Ambassador of Byron with lots of roles and responsibilities throughout the year
- Become a Subject Ambassador; work with teachers of your favourite subject to assist in the learning of students within the school and promote the subject at Open Evenings.
- Take part in ‘quality work experience’ which will develop your skills for the future
- Be part of a ‘Buddy Scheme’
- National Citizen Service – we are part of this – so can you be!
- University Visits; as a 6th form we encourage and organise visits to local and national Universities including Oxbridge Visits
- Be part of our fundraising events
Financial Support
Financial Support in General
Byron College provides students with the basic needs for study. Text books are provided along with A4 paper. There is unlimited access to a printer and the paper to go with it so students should not generally have to buy their own printing ink as they can bring work to college saved on a USB pen or e mail it to themselves from home and print it out.
Transport
For 2017 – 2018, students living more than two miles from the college have received support with travel costs via a cheque paid half – termly at the following rates.

Bursaries
In addition to the transport allowance, students can apply for a bursary as follows:
- An ‘enhanced’ bursary of £1,200 pa (paid half-termly or monthly) for students who fall within one of the following categories:
- Children in care
- Care leavers
- Children who are on income support (income support is paid to young people such as teenage parents, young people with severe disabilities, teenagers living away from their parents and young people whose parents have died).
- Alternatively, a ‘FSM’ bursary (paid half-termly or monthly) for students who are in receipt of free school meals.
- Alternatively, a ‘Discretionary’ bursary (paid half-termly or monthly) for students whose parents are on income support.

- Byron 6th form students may also be eligible for Free School Meals. This would mean that students account was automatically and confidentially topped up on a daily basis. To find out more about Free School Meals please complete a form which can be collected from main reception.
