PSHE

At St Bede’s, the intention of our PSHE curriculum is to

• provide a holistic curriculum for life, working in partnership with parents and carers, to support the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of all pupils, rooted in the wisdom of the Catholic Church.
• develop the whole child, helping to discover what it means to be fully human.
• build upon the knowledge, understanding, skills, attributes, and values students have acquired and developed during the Primary phase.
• provide students with the tools to protect and enhance all aspects of their wellbeing.
• help students build and maintain healthy relationships.
• support students to become responsible, active citizens in society.

Our PSHE programme is taught through three core themes:

• Health and Wellbeing, Created and Loved by God.
• Relationships, Created to Love Others.
• Living in the Wider World, Created to Live in a Community.

Our KS3 curriculum builds upon the model primary curriculum provided by the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales. It addresses the changes that many young people experience as they transition to secondary school; the physical and mental changes of adolescence, the increasing influence of their peers and the media, and the challenges of their increasing independence.

• To provide pupils with the tools to protect and enhance wellbeing, our KS3 pupils are taught about the changing adolescent body, staying safe online and the different ways to promote good physical and mental health.
• To help pupils maintain healthy relationships, our KS3 pupils are taught the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships, to appreciate and celebrate difference, the harm caused by prejudice and discrimination and how to seek and gain consent.
• To support pupils to become responsible, active citizens in society, our KS3 pupils are taught the value of democracy and the rule of law, to promote equality and freedom of faith, financial awareness and to consider their future career prospects.

Our KS4 curriculum deepens knowledge and understanding and further explores attitudes and values acquired during KS3. The KS4 curriculum reflects the fact that students are moving towards an independent role in adult life, taking on a greater responsibility for themselves and others.

• To build upon knowledge acquired in KS3 our KS4 health and wellbeing curriculum has a greater focus on some of the challenges to health and wellbeing that comes with adult independence. Pupils are taught the dangers of legal and illegal drugs, how to resist peer pressure, the ways in which STI’s are transmitted, pregnancy and birth control.
• To build upon knowledge acquired in KS3, and to reflect the fact that pupils are moving closer towards being involved in adult relationships, our KS4 relationships curriculum has a greater focus upon adult one to one relationships. Pupils are taught love, sex and responsibility, the dangers of coercive control and parenthood.
• To build upon knowledge acquired in KS3, our KS4 Living in the Wider World curriculum has a greater emphasis upon becoming a responsible adult in society. Our students undertake a more in-depth study of the role of parliament and how laws are made, the dangers of stereotyping, how the protected characteristics are protected by the law, how to write C. V’s and apply for jobs, the different types of mortgages and First Aid.
