Guidance

Funding allocation
Allocations are on a per pupil basis – £80 per pupil in years reception to 11.
Use of funds
DfE guidance states:
- Schools should use this funding for specific activities to support their pupils to catch up for lost teaching over the previous months, in line with the guidance on curriculum expectations for the next academic year.
- Schools have the flexibility to spend their funding in the best way for their cohort and circumstances.
- To support schools to make the best use of this funding, the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has published a coronavirus (COVID-19) support guide for schools with evidence-based approaches to catch up for all students. Schools should use this document to help them direct their additional funding in the most effective way. This could include, for example:
- small group or one-to-one tuition (particularly through the National Tutoring Programme)
- summer programmes to help re-engage pupils or extra teaching capacity from September
Trust strategy
To maximise the impact, Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust (the “Trust”) has adopted a joined-up approach to addressing the ‘catch-up’ needs of pupils within the Trust working in partnership with Teach First.
15 Teach First participants will be deployed across the 13 schools participating in the programme with 3 geographical areas of deployment:
- Durham
- South Tyneside
- Sunderland
The Teach First participants will perform some mentoring of pupils but will also free up experienced teaching staff to perform intervention work.
A summary of the intervention strategies to be employed is as follows:
Y11 / Y13 Small group tuition – lunchtime / P6
Timetabled intensive tuition tailored around pupil needs and gaps in learning. High quality teaching and academic support is targeted at underachieving groups / PP / SEN / grade 3 / 4 borderline / pupils who did not engage in lockdown.
1:1 Mentoring Programme for Y11 & Y13
Timetabled mentoring sessions designed to overcome barriers to learning, develop strong study and revision skills and build resilience. Pupils targets are recorded each week with strategies and success criteria, which are reviewed the following week.
Creation of Y11 Catch up / revision resources
GCSE / A level Revision resources / guides / recorded lessons are produced which focus on memory retrieval, gaps in learning, key subject content, exam practice questions, worked examples, revision mats etc to support pupils in preparing for exams. Resources are available on VLE / e-mailed to students.
KS4 Reduced class size intervention
Class sizes are significantly reduced to facilitate a greater range of approaches to teaching and learning, increased teacher feedback and improved pupil behaviour and attitudes, to raise outcomes.
Y7 Reading intervention
A reading catch up programme to raise literacy levels in lower attaining pupils (below age related expectations) e.g. 1:1 / small group reading sessions; Accelerated reader programme etc.
Y7 Numeracy intervention
A Maths catch up programme to raise numeracy levels in lower attaining pupils (below age related expectations) e.g. 1:1 / small group numeracy intervention, computer based interventions etc.
Primary Intervention
TF deliver lessons in primaries to free up staff to deliver literacy / numeracy intervention.
Measuring impact
Curriculum/learning gaps will be identified through teacher and formal assessment.
Ongoing assessment will be undertaken to ensure that pupils are making rapid progress as a result of the interventions made.
