At St Bede’s Catholic School and Byron Sixth Form College, we care deeply about creating a community where British Values, Gospel Values, and the protected characteristics are upheld and celebrated. These principles are central to our mission and Catholic ethos, shaping the way we educate, support, and inspire every student.

We actively promote the five British Values throughout school life:

  1. Democracy – Students are encouraged to have a voice through school councils, surveys, and leadership opportunities. We teach the importance of participation and respect for democratic processes.
  2. The Rule of Law – Clear expectations, policies, and restorative practices help students understand the value of laws in maintaining fairness and safety.
  3. Individual Liberty – We foster an environment where students can make informed choices, express themselves responsibly, and develop confidence in their own identity.
  4. Mutual Respect – Respect is at the heart of our Gospel Values. We teach students to value others’ opinions, beliefs, and backgrounds, creating a culture of kindness and understanding.
  5. Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs – Through our curriculum, assemblies, and enrichment activities, we celebrate diversity and encourage dialogue, ensuring all students feel included and respected.

These values are embedded in assemblies, PSHE lessons, curriculum planning, and special events, as well as through partnerships with external agencies and guest speakers. They work alongside our commitment to Gospel Values - love, compassion, and justice - and the Equality Act’s protected characteristics, ensuring that every member of our community is treated with dignity and fairness.

Our approach to Prevent aligns with these principles, safeguarding students from extremism and promoting resilience against radicalisation, while nurturing a strong sense of belonging and shared responsibility.
